Belfor’s schedule of works includes the removal of the charred wooden decks and lead-based paint from the metal framework of the hull

Belfor UK have been appointed to assist in the specialist conservation of the Cutty Sark in London, following the fire which ripped through the vessel in May.

Most of the original features had been removed prior to the incident; however, substantial fire and smoke damage was sustained to the decks.

Belfor’s schedule of works includes the removal of the charred wooden decks and lead-based paint from the metal framework of the hull. A polythene ‘tent’ has been erected over the ship in order to reduce the secondary damage from the varying weather conditions.

Dr Greg French, managing director of Belfor, said: “The job requires specialist cleaning techniques and a high level of Health and Safety – Belfor are the ideal disaster recovery partner with 35 years of experience and skills we are well equipped to carry out the work.”
