Roger Miller, former secretary general of AIRMIC and inaugural chairman and chief executive of the Institute of Risk Management (IRM), died on June 15 after a short illness

A Dorset man, Roger won a Domus Exhibition scholarship to Balliol College Oxford at the age of 17 to read modern history. In 1952 when he was 24, the Employers Liability posted him to Kuala Lumpur, and later to Singapore and Calcutta. His years in the Far East to a large degree shaped and coloured his entire life.

Returning to the UK in 1966, Roger dedicated himself to insurance and risk management. In 1983, he joined AIRMIC as secretary general. After his retirement, he continued for some years as editor of AIRMIC Express and photographer of many AIRMIC events. Roger's contribution to risk management in the UK will be remembered for a long time - along with his great sense of humour, enjoyment of a good glass and liberal use of Latin phrases.
