Faulty design and construction of school buildings in many countries put school children and teachers at unacceptable risk in earthquakes and other disasters, according to 30 world experts brought tog

A new OECD publication sets out the problem and makes recommendations for improving earthquake safety in schools.

According to the report Keeping Schools Safe in Earthquakes, tragedies occur in schools because available technology is not applied and existing laws and regulations are not sufficiently enforced. It says the design and construction of schools could be improved quickly and at reasonable cost to lower significantly the seismic risk to schools.
