Education and value are the themes of the AIRMIC biennial convention to be held in Harrogate from 4-5 November

It is a unique event in the risk manager's calendar, being the only major conference reserved exclusively for AIRMIC members. The programme is intended to provide risk managers with useful information that will make a practical difference when they return to the office.

There is plenty of activity in the morning before the convention's formal opening, most notably a series of educational workshops. "Our overriding aim in arranging these educational workshops is to ensure that delegates leave better informed and itching to put into practice what they have learned at the convention," says Clare Hemmings of the organising committee.

"We would like to think they will have real take-home value."

The speakers include Peter Power, an expert on business continuity, who will speak on terrorism issues. David Lacey of the Post Office will discuss information security. He will outline the issues the Post Office has faced, the difficulties encountered and how it has dealt with them. Other speakers will deal with topics like broker commissions, health care provision and what firms expect of their risk managers.

An innovation this year will be the chance to take part in a fingertip opinion survey sponsored by Deloitte Touche. Each delegate will have a computer terminal so he or she can participate in an on-line questionnaire on the subject of 'governing organisations'. The results will be announced on day two, providing a snapshot of risk manager opinion.

AIRMIC would like to thank the following firms for their generosity in supporting the biennial convention: Smart and Cook, FM Global and Gallagher Bassett. The cost of £150 per delegate is intended to encourage firms to send a wide range of staff. "This is an opportunity for those who would not normally attend and participate in an AIRMIC event," says AIRMIC council member, Colin Campbell.
