The firm’s director of corporate ERM and insurance management explains how he draws motivation from former F1 driver Mario Andretti

F1

What are you thinking about right now?

Right now I’m thinking about how to ensure the best and most effective way that our company ERM wide process is really and smoothly embedded into our business culture as well as into the operating processes in order to contribute to enhance shareholders value, without increasing the operating expenses.

What is your most treasured possession?

It might seem most trivial, but the most important is the value of being able to enjoy good health. Without it we would not have the energy needed to inspire passion and excellent execution in business and even to love our loved ones.

Who is your greatest hero?

Mario Andretti, the unforgettable Italian-American driver of F1. He used to say: “…if everything seems to be under control, you’re just not going fast enough!”

Risk management is not a calculated and clever way to reach the limit, even the last one?

What is your greatest fear?

From a business point of view, I do not have any major fear. I’m always aware that the zero-risk doesn’t exist and I’m dedicated to try to manage the risks within the company risk appetite. But I remain paranoid about risks because: “only paranoids can survive”. On the contrary, from a personal point of view, once again health is the greatest value and losing the good health for my loved ones and for me is definitively my greatest fear.

Tell us a secret

If I have a secret and I’ll tell you, it would not be longer a secret!

What is the most important lesson you have learnt?

During my nearly 30 year of professional career, out of which 25 are spent in the insurance industry, I was fortunate enough to meet so many competent and good people. When I was a student in high school, I learned from my fantastic professor of Latin and Greek that an important life lesson is to always remain humble. I’m always been tried to learn any small and simple lesson from all the people I’ve met in my professional life: as from the shop floor as from the board room. Unfortunately, some of these great people have already passed away. Now, I’d to remember two great friends and colleagues: Vittorio Rivolta and Luciano Pasquali. A lot of lessons I’ve learned and stolen from both of them are always in my memory and inspire me in my professional life as far as in my private life. I’m very grateful to life to have met them. I always pray for them and for their peace.
