NASA satellite images show section breaking off in what it has called a “significant event”

Iceberg Greenland

An iceberg twice the size of Manhattan has broken away from the Petermann Glacier in Greenland, scientists have revealed.

The breakaway comes two years after an ice island 100 square miles in size split from the same glacier. The latest calving has concerned some observers.

“It’s dramatic. It’s disturbing,” said University of Delaware’s Andreas Muenchow. “We have data for 150 years and we see changes that we have not seen before”.

However, while the iceberg might present a danger to shipping as it floats away, it is not expected to have an impact of sea-levels.

Scientists have warned of changes taking place in the Greenland ice shelf in recent years, warning that increasingly warm temperatures have led to extensive thinning.
