Over 70 % of Hue City flooded and death toll stands at 350
Tropical storm Ketsana made landfall for a second time in Vietnam as a category 2 storm flooding over 70 % of Hue City and killing around 350 people.
RMS issued the following bulletin.
Following severe flooding and damage in the Philippines as a result of tropical storm Ketsana, further damage has been sustained in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos after Ketsana’s second landfall in Vietnam. Yesterday, Ketsana tracked west across the South China Sea, making landfall in Vietnam near the border of Quang Ngai and Quang Nam with maximum sustained winds of 104 mph (167 km/hr) as category 2 storm.
A combination of high winds and flooding has resulted in damage to over 50,000 houses in Vietnam, including homes located in Danang, the fourth largest city in Vietnam with a population of around 750,000 people and in Hue City, the capital city of Thua Thien-Hue province, which has a population of around 340,000 people.
According to a United Nations report, 70 percent of Hue City area is flooded. In the Philippines, damage reports continue to emerge with the latest damage counts suggesting over 10,000 homes either damaged or destroyed. The total death toll from Ketsana across all counties affected stands at around 350 as of this morning, however this figure is likely to continue to rise.
