Egypt’s Constitutional Court chief judge Adly Mahmud Mansour has been sworn in as interim leader after the army ousted president Mohammed Morsi, the country’s first democratically elected leader.

The army has put Morsi under house arrest, stating that he has “failed to meet the demands of the people”, the BBC reported.

Authorities have issued up to 300 arrest warrants against senior members of the Muslim Brotherhood. But despite this and days of protest against the Islamist movement, Mansour said: “The Muslim Brotherhood are part of this people and are invited to participate in building the nation as nobody will be excluded, and if they respond to the invitation, they will be welcomed.”

Mansour’s appointment follows days of mass rallies as millions took to the streets of Cairo and other cities. Protest numbers have been reported to exceed those that ousted Morsi’s predecessor Hosni Mubarak.
