A Middle Eastern expert lists the most significant developments to affect this key strategic region

The past twelve months have been truly momentous for Middle Eastern geo-politics, the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq and the Arab uprisings have fundamentally changed the security and politico-economic outlook for the region.

In a recent blog post, Robert Danin, a former aide to Mideast Quartet envoy Tony Blair, and a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, lists the top ten most significant developments.

His top five are:

1. Mohamed Bouazizi’s self-immolation and death in Tunisia

2. Hosni Mubarak’s toppling in Egypt

3. Gulf Cooperation Council sending troops into Bahrain

4. Violent uprisings in Syria

5. Death of Osama bin Laden
