During the winter of 1811-1812, three very large earthquakes (over 8.0 magnitude) devastated the area. The USGS said the February quake was a warning of the need to strengthen older buildings and structures. According to the USGS, 2004 was the deadliest year for earthquakes since 1556 when the great Shansi, China, earthquake killed an estimated 830,000 people. More than 275,950 deaths have been reported from the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that hit the Indian Ocean on 26 December.
