SunGard Availability Services has opened a 65,000 sq ft workplace recovery centre in Leatherhead, Surrey.

The facility provides over 1,200 workplace recovery positions. SunGard said organisations can re-locate staff and systems to the centre in the event they cannot access their buildings or their systems fail.

The opening coincides with the pending launch of the second part of the British Standards Institution's (BSI) new standard for business continuity management, BS 25999.

“Events such as the recent floods and the launch of the new BS 25999 standard for business continuity management have driven issues of business availability and protecting vital information up the priority list for UK companies

Keith Tilley, managing director UK and senior vice-president Europe, SunGard Availability Services

BS 25999 is a benchmark which businesses are urged to meet in order to ensure they have effective business continuity processes in place.

Keith Tilley, managing director UK and senior vice-president Europe, SunGard Availability Services said: "Events such as the recent floods and the launch of the new BS 25999 standard for business continuity management have driven issues of business availability and protecting vital information up the priority list for UK companies. Ensuring your staff are well looked after and provided for in the event of a disaster is a crucial part of Information Availability as any business’s greatest asset is its people. As such, our new Leatherhead facility is an important addition to our growing national network of recovery centres.”
