Ray Mattholie awarded the title of European Risk Manager of the Year.

Top european award

Ray Mattholie, head of risk and insurance solutions for British Telecommunications (BT), has been awarded the title of European Risk Manager of the Year. Ray, who has more than 30 years experience within the risk and insurance sector, has been an AIRMIC member since returning from Canada to join BT in 1992.

After receiving the award, he said: “It is a great honour to receive an individual award such as this, but I see it as the worthy recognition of the achievements of our virtual team at BT - all those involved with risk and insurance solutions, our captive company, and our supportive service and product suppliers.”

He added that he believed one reason for his nomination and success had been good communication. “Working for BT, we not surprisingly have good communications systems, such as an excellent intranet, but the quality of such systems also depends upon their effective usage and the style and content of the message conveyed. We have concentrated on the message at BT to give risk management greater visibility throughout the company.

The BT team is also spreading its risk management message externally. A special risk management forum for clients and suppliers was recently held in Munich, while Ray encourages members of his team to become involved in networking events and seminars organised by AIRMIC and the Institute of Risk Management (IRM).

Current AIRMIC chairman, Philip Thomas was one of the first to congratulate Ray on his honour. “Ray Mattholie has a challenging role within the fast-evolving telecommunications sector. Yet during the nine years he has been a member of AIRMIC, Ray has always found time to give support and invaluable advice to the association and its members. Active members like Ray are the life-blood of any professional organisation.”
