Good e-mail security produces tangible benefits, but ‘best in class’ companies are in the minority.

A recent US report on the costs and losses, including data leakage, associated with e-mail shows that companies' experience varies widely. Despite increased e-mail traffic and more sophisticated attacks, best in class companies decreased the loss of productivity and the cost associated with remediation of e-mail attacks, the number of malware infections and the number of data loss incidents.

The strategies, capabilities and technology enablers that best-in-class companies use form the core recommendations of the report. Such strategies include integrating email and web security, using encryption to protect email in transit, and deploying data loss prevention software.
