The European Parliament has voted in favour of a new approach to the way we deal with chemicals.

REACH (registration, evaluation and authorisation of chemicals) sets in place measures for industry to provide evidence of the safety of chemicals and will make sure that everyone in the supply chain will know how to use them safely.

The vote introduces changes to the draft law, the most significant of which are:

- strengthen substitution of hazardous chemicals, making it compulsory to stop using them if there are safer alternatives

- reduce the need for testing on animals

- make more information available throughout the supply chain and to consumers on chemicals and their uses in manufactured goods.
