Sony admits ‘external intrusion’ as Playstation Network put offline for a week

After insisting for nearly a week that it was performing maintenance works, Sony finally admitted that it has been the victim of hacking attack.

A statement from Sony announced that the lucrative Playstation Network, which has been offline for 6 days, suffered an ‘external intrusion’. The attack has left customers unable to game or download music and films or stream on the movie service LoveFilm.

In the company’s blog, Sony thanked customers for their patience and assured them that they were working ‘around the clock’ to fix the problem.

Patrick Seybold, Senior Director of Corporate Communications wrote that “though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security”.

However, Sony has admitted that it does not know when the necessary security changes will be finished to the Playstation network, with around 70m users, and has not responded so far to customer concerns regarding the safety of their private information, including credit card details.
