UN official says weather related disasters accounted for 59% of all reported disasters last year

Serious flooding affects 500m people every year, not just in Asian countries but in countries like Sudan, Colombia, Ethiopia and Afghanistan, according to a senior U.N. official.

Quoted by the Associated Press, Assistant Secretary-General Margareta Wahlstrom, the U.N. deputy emergency relief coordinator, said floods and weather related disasters accounted for 59% of all reported disasters last year.

She also said, governments need to invest in flood defenses and drainage.
