With Transparency International’s annual corruption perceptions index due any day now this week’s top risk is the fight against corruption.
Over one hundred countries worldwide have ratified a UN treaty against corruption. And the UN, while no stranger to corruption itself, says it takes “a comprehensive approach to tackling corruption worldwide.” The video below explains in a handy infographic format what the UN is doing to tackle the problems.
On Monday October 24 a joint report by the World Bank and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) urged governments to devote more resources to training investigators in fighting financial crime, including large-scale corruption, money laundering and terrorist financing.
Needless to say despite these best efforts corruption is still rife in some corners of society. “We need to put corporate transparency back on the national and international agenda,” said Emile van der Does de Willebois, a World Bank financial expert.
